Ron and Hermione were the ones who died. Neville had been telling Harry that there was an accident with the Knight Bus, that a dragon had attacked it.
James had been there all along, but none of them could see or hear him in the mirror until Harry at the end there. I think he was wishing he could see his family again - probably meaning Ron and Hermione, because that's what they were - and that's when he was finally able to see and hear James in the mirror - because he wanted to see family, and James was his family.
